A day in the life of a Process Operator

The process operator is an integral part of the business without which none of us would be here today. We are reliant on our loyal hard working people for the future success of Farne.

An operator’s day begins with clocking in and getting togged up for the shop floor. Hygiene is a major focus at Farne and therefore we supply the correct personal protective equipment to all operators. So wellingtons on, hat on, wash hands, coat on and wash hands again when entering the factory. All of these things are gone through at the induction on your first day.

Once into the factory an operator will go to his or her area and begin work. The work is quite varied from area to area and a preference can be highlighted during interview stage and we would always try and accommodate if possible. The day consists of three sessions about 2.5 hrs long with two 20minute breaks in between sessions. The focus is on hygiene, quality and output and these things are at the forefront of Farne’s success in becoming the lowest cost producer of smoked salmon in the country. Therefore no matter how small the job done by the operator on the shop floor it’s importance is huge.

Once the day is done the areas are cleaned and made ready for the next day or the next shift.

The operators within Farne also have the opportunity to progress within the business. Currently two of our Sector managers started life at Farne on the floor and have progressed to looking after their own departments by showing a willingness to learn and improve. We are a company that welcomes ambitious people and we look to cultivating them into the future managers. We are a company that welcomes ambitious people and we are always on the lookout for future managers.
